Your eyes are one of the first places to show signs of aging. Loose skin, puffiness, and under-eye bags can make you look tired, even when you feel well-rested. Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a precise procedure that restores a refreshed, youthful appearance to the eyes by addressing excess skin and fat around the eyelids.
Why Do My Eyes Look Tired?
As we age, the skin of the upper and lower eyelids can stretch and fat pads around the eyes may bulge forward. This leads to puffiness, eyelid “bags,” and shadows under the eyes. Together, these changes often create a tired or aged appearance.
- Upper eyelids: The upper eyelids contain two fat pads (central and nasal). With age, excess skin and bulging fat can cause heaviness or hooding.
- Lower eyelids: The lower eyelids have three fat pads (nasal, central, and lateral). Protrusion of these pads creates under-eye bags and deep hollows beneath them.
Types of Eyelid Surgery
- Upper Blepharoplasty: Removes excess upper eyelid skin and any prominent fat for a youthful, more open appearance.
- Lower Blepharoplasty: Removes or repositions lower eyelid fat to reduce puffiness. Often paired with fat grafting to soften hollows, and laser skin resurfacing to tighten skin. If significant skin excess is present, a small excision may be performed.
Benefits of Eyelid Surgery
- Reduces puffiness and under-eye bags
- Smooths excess eyelid skin
- Creates a refreshed, more youthful appearance
- Enhances the natural beauty of the eyes
- Can be performed alone or in combination with other procedures such as facelift or brow lift
